Mission and Mentoring

Hi! My name is Laura Deal. I grew up on the South Shore of Boston, and throughout my childhood attended Union Congregational Church of Weymouth Landing – a place that felt like home and where I heard the story of a God who loved me so much that, “He sent his one and only Son … that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17).

Moving to New Jersey, after graduating from Syracuse University with a BS in journalism and political science, I met Glenn – who was also from Massachusetts and had the same funny New England accent as me. That was it – it was a done ‘DEAL’! We fell in love, married and raised a family together – Alexandra (24), Nicole (23) and Christian (17) in Montague Township, NJ. During that time, we started attending First Baptist Church of Newton, NJ. It is here that I learned how we, “are utterly incapable of living the glorious lives God wills for us…but out of sheer generosity God put us in right standing with himself. A pure gift. He got us out of the mess we’re in and restored us to where he always wanted us to be. And he did it by means of Jesus Christ.” (Romans 3:23-24).

We grew to love God more and more each day as a couple, and as a family. Through our church, Glenn taught Sunday School and served as a deacon, and I worked at our food pantry, ran a Girls Club and served as a deaconess. Our joy of serving the needs of others – through the local church – is one of our greatest passions as a couple. And we raised our kids doing ministry together. As a family, we’ve been on two international mission trips. One to Kosovo, where Glenn helped widows in rebuilding their homes after the war, and Alex, Nikki and I worked with children at several vacation bible school locations. Our youngest was only a year old so he stayed behind in the US. On a mission trip to Canada, we served at Mount Traber Bible Camp, working as counselors (Glenn and I) and camp helpers (Alex and Nikki) to campers from the local community, many of them in foster care. Christian was old enough to come, but not old enough to be a camper so he stayed with the pastor and his wife in an air-conditioned home on the campground, with his own bedroom. While we toiled in hot, dusty, spider-infested cabins. And the cabin next to mine was snake infested. (Did I mention my phobia of snakes?) I sensed an unfairness in the living quarters during this adventure for Jesus!

More recently, I served as a mentor for teen moms and their babies with Young Lives ministry in Port Jervis, NY. I have a passion for helping others – especially women who are suffering – find their hope and healing in Jesus.

I serve on the Women’s Ministry Team at Milford Bible Church discipling (and being discipled), and mentoring (and being mentored) by women of all ages as we all grow – together – in our love and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I am excited to see women come together from all denominations, and all walks of life – for such a time as this – to unite and raise ONE VOICE of praise to God, to study his word and to fellowship and do missional work together for his glory. One of the missions of one voice will be to work with the NJ Coalition Against Human Trafficking, helping to rescue young girls from sexual slavery and introducing them to a God of truth, freedom, forgiveness, and restoration.
